Yes, DaCosta was familiar with Ms. Marvel’s entry into the project, and is probably familiar with how the character’s powers were altered to fit the live-action iteration. Indeed, DaCosta has found a kinship with Kamala Khan as both are nerds from close quarters. she said:
“I’m a big nerd from New York City and a big nerd from Jersey City, this hero was writing fanfiction like I did when I was that age. […] It was really fun to feel really close to that character in a special way, in a way that you don’t often feel when it’s Iron Man or Thor. It was very exciting for me to know that I could be a part of bringing this character I’ve loved for ten years to the big screen.”
Kamala Khan is played by Iman Vellani, who returns to his role in the TV series. “Miss Marvel,” DaCosta directed an episode. Vellani stated that DaCosta’s geekiness was not as important as his professionalism on set. The actor said that DaCosta managed to keep morale very high on set, which was a difficult task given the scope and budget of the production. “She has a really calm air,” Vellani said.
But when it comes to Kevin Feige, DaCosta admits he lost his cool a bit. Not because he’s angry. He went back to his nerdy instincts and started thinking about Ms. Marvel and not Ms. Marvel on screen in the 2013 iteration.
