As part of Tarantino and Rodriguez’s homage to exploitative cinema, “Grindhouse” was released in theaters with a bundle of trailers from the fake films shown before the feature release. Two of these have already been adapted into real films – Jason Eisener’s “The Shotgun Tramp” and Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills,” made right after “Grindhouse.” It took Roth a hot minute, but “Thanksgiving” finally looks (almost) ready for the close-up.
Little is known about Roth’s plans for the movie, but if his fake trailer is any indication, we’re in for a real blood feast (with a special side of camp). In the trailer, a knife-wielding maniac in a pilgrim costume follows his victims as they rush through a vanity spot, walk through a Macy’s parade, and cut turkeys. After each murder, a chilling voice-over says, “There will be no leftovers this year.”
Roth’s latest directorial output isn’t everyone’s favourite, but his passion for genre cinema has been conveyed through projects like “Eli Roth’s History of Horror” and “Eli Roth Presents: A Ghost Ruined My Life” It is as admirable as it is contagious. And his turn in “Scream 3” alone proved that Patrick Dempsey had the chops. Starting out playing some kind of menacing slasher would be a fascinating departure from the McDreamy mold with which Dempsey is usually pretty close. Spyglass Media is producing “Thanksgiving,” and they haven’t officially confirmed Dempsey will be casting – at least not yet.
We’ll keep you posted on other “Thanksgiving” news, but until then, the original and highly NSFW trailer for Roth’s “Grindhouse” suitable for streaming.
