What Are Lo-Fi Songs?
Lo-fi, or lofi, is a term for a recording that doesn’t sound as good as it could. “Lo-fi” is short for “low fidelity.” It used to mean a cheaply made recording with background noise or mistakes in the performance that could be heard. This was the opposite of a “high fidelity” or “hi-fi” production. During the 1980s and 1990s, lo-fi was thought to sound more real than professional methods of making music. Many punk, indie rock, and hip-hop artists went for a lo-fi style because it was cheaper and better for their art.
Lo-fi is a subgenre of electronic music that is similar to downtempo music, the chillwave scene, and lo-fi hip-hop. Lo-fi music combined beats and samples from the house, jazz, easy listening, and hip-hop with a DIY music style that emphasized the rough, homemade sound of analog recordings. The result was dreamy, retro-sounding music that many people liked for background music, especially when they were studying.
